Searching for Sapphires

Denmagic will be the sole representative for Team Pfieffer for this year's edition of The Championships, aiming for the final act of Australian Racing's "Grand Finals".

The Group 2 Sapphire Stakes, a set weights and penalties contest for fillies and mares is the last race of the day and is already proving to be a difficult task for punters to analyse, with five horses quoted under the $10 mark, including our fabulous mare.

Denmagic was last seen in the G1 Coolmore Classic, her toughest test and one that took the shine from her imposing record when she finished unplaced in the tricky conditions.

For Pfieffer, every finger has been crossed this week in hope for a better surface.

"The rain just hasn't let up at all in the past few weeks which has played havoc with a lot of plans" said Pfieffer.

Randwick was rating as a heavy 8 earlier in the week yet track manager Navesh Ramdani is confident with a drier forecast for the next 24 hours the surface will improve to a soft 7 at least.

For Denmagic's owners, another ticket to a G1 race day awaits, the mare having already taken her connections to Flemington on Derby Day and to Rosehill on Slipper Day.

"Getting a horse running at carnival time is a huge bonus, and a thrill for everyone involved" said the trainer.

With four runners for Canbeera today and of course Denmagic tomorrow, Pfieffer has two new recruits fresh from the breakers in the back of his mind to look forward to.

"There are still opportunities available to be involved in my latest Inglis Classic purchases, a Star Witness filly and a Dundeel filly" he said.

"Both fillies have my tick of approval on both pedigree and type, and have important black-type on the page to suggest they will perform early".

Joining the pair of Classic purchases is a cleverly purchased filly from the Magic Millions March Yearling Sale - the Sizzling ex Fates filly.

"The first thing that comes to mind with this filly is value, combining what I consider to be the most important factors when purchasing a yearling in pedigree and physical presentation. At just $20,000, we have secured a daughter of one of Australia’s most exciting new sires in Sizzling who had the top lot for the March sale at $160,000; and it is hard to discount the impact his sire Snitzel has on racing’s landscape at present" commented Pfieffer.

"Our new filly is from Fates, a speedy daughter of the blue-blooded sire Kempinsky (himself from the exceptional G1 winning mare Tristalove) who won over 1100m at Wyong and was placed at Canterbury. Fates is the half-sister to the Alinghi Stakes (L) runner-up in Aegean Sea, a mare on the rise for Melbourne trainer Danny O’Brien.

"She will be an ideal 'Girls Only' horse that can be aimed for the lucrative Women In Racing bonus on the Gold Coast in 2018, so a good present for the wife, girlfriend - or both.

"It's exciting times for my stable and I have three outstanding fillies on the way into the barn. Everyone can be involved and enjoy the type of journey Denmagic has given us so far, and that is a story that is far from finished".
