Passed with flying colours

Denmagic easily earned Pfieffer’s seal of approval with her superb return to the racing at Randwick over the weekend.

Running the hot favourite Dal Cielo to a half-length and easily accounting for the remaining competitors, Denmagic overcame both the outside gate and a 59kg imposition to add yet another well earned placing to her burgeoning CV.

Unsurprisingly the gleaming coat and effortless stride took the eyes of Sky Racing’s Lizzie Jelfs, the “paddock guru” who analysed our mare as she paraded and could not go past her condition as the pick of the yard.

Settling at the tail of the field after the break, Denmagic switched off with ease for Bowman with Aegean Sea setting the pace up front as expected. Creeping closer as the field bunched on straightening, Denmagic wound up and produced her textbook sprint to be bridging an impossible gap behind a hard-fit rival that just slipped away from her reach first up.

“I had wanted to give her another trial but opted for the 1000m first up, so it has turned out to be a worthwhile trial at the very least”.

“She will be heading towards the Coolmore (Classic) in March that rates as the ideal race for a mare of her quality and I know she is more than capable of being competitive”.

Denmagic has matured into the fully furnished racehorse that now easily rates as the pride of Pfieffer’s stable with a natural progression of growth and her tireless attitude to the pressures of a committed racing operation.

“She keeps getting stronger with each preparation and each challenge I set for her is met with consistency” complemented Pfieffer.

“She’s a mare who gives 110% each race and impresses with each outing, from trials and trackwork to race day”.

The quality of the daughter of Denman is widely documented in racing’s media circles and certainly well-known amongst the readers of this newsletter as she regularly features in our weekly write up.

And just like her previous campaigns, Denmagic caught the eye of surely one of her biggest fans, Racenet’s ratings man and resident time chief, Paul Joice.

In his popular weekly write-up for the online racing source, Paul Joice nominated Denmagic as one of his “top three horses to follow” from across the nation’s race meetings for the weekend.

“In what can only be described as a slashing return, Group I-paced mare Denmagic motored-up from last on the turn to claim the runner-up prize behind a flying Dal Cielo in the 1000m Chi-X Sprint. Was one of only three runners at the meeting to break 34 seconds for the final 600m when clocked 33.84. The 1000-metres is supposed to be well short of her best but she looked in fantastic order and with that run under her belt should be competitive right through this campaign. Expect the Coolmore Classic will be her main target but she can pick-up a few extras along the way." wrote Joice.

She might be missing the stakes win that has eluded her connections for 19 starts, but this is one tough competitor with a story that is far from complete.
