Going the Distance

The crew at Pfieffer Racing will be in pursuit of new season winners with multiple runners engaged in a host of races across the state.

In a bid to ensure his horses are ideally placed, Pfieffer has scoured the NSW race diary and selected a number of meetings to nominate for - even checking for races across the border in Queensland.

Booked on a truck to the sunshine state is Ziggy Willie, a handsome bay gelding who narrowly missed the "bob of the head" at Canterbury last start over 1250m.

"He was unlucky not to get the win, Mercurian (the winner) just had the better run and put his head down on the line" said Pfieffer.

"I found him a decent race at Eagle Farm, and popped the blinkers back on to sharpen him up. He's got barrier one and I think he is ready to explode with the right run in transit".

Pfieffer will be nearby this weekend at the inaugural Aquis Farm Stallion Parade, no doubt paying a quick visit to his star mare Cradle Me.

The feisty Group 2 winning mare is booked to resident stallion Spill The Beans, who will "need to watch himself" when meeting Cradle Me for their anticipated hot date.

"She has a mighty kick from that back end" jokes foreman Sue O'Keeffe.

By one of Australia's most respected young sires in Snitzel, Spill The Beans is from Miss Dodwell, an Arrowfield stud homebred by the globetrotting champion Falbrav.

A standout on looks complimented by Group 2 winning performances, Spill The Beans looks as the ideal first partner for Pfieffer's pocket rocket.

Back home at headquarters the team will send Sworn In to Kembla Grange for the 1600m maiden with Blaike McDougall taking the ride. A chocolate brown son of Widden Stud's royally bred Tickets, Sworn In is yet to break his maiden from seven starts but has always shaped as a horse that will hit his best over further ground and with race experience.

The 3yo filly Eyelash will venture to Goulburn on Monday for a start in the 1300m maiden, with Jay Ford booked to ride the daughter of Dane Shadow. The aptly named Eyelash is from the New Zealand-bred Mascara Magic, a granddaughter of the champion 3yo filly of her generation in Savana City. With a pedigree that suggests she will be suited by a mile or even further, Eyelash will only improve on her efforts as she learns the racing caper.

Heading to Newcastle on Tuesday are Brilliant Meteor and Who's A Star, two charismatic geldings with race fitness ensuring they won't be making up numbers.

Brilliant Meteor is without a win this preparation but has been interrupted by poor weather and even as a 6YO Pfieffer is yet to fully understand the enigmatic gelding's best conditions.

"He won on a heavy track convincingly but then showed us he wasn't entirely comfortable in the soft ground" commented Pfieffer.

"He is a talented horse that seems to appreciate the 1800 to 2000 (metre) range but lack of suitable races has meant we haven't quite found the perfect start for him".

Who's A Star, a strong, "fully furnished" 4YO son of Star Witness, will reunite with Christian Reith in the 1250m maiden and be "in with his chance" from barrier 4.

A horse that has shown significant improvement this preparation, Who's A Star will be one to watch as he progresses this campaign.
