Gearing up for Spring

With a sense of spring sending a wave of excitement across Sydney, Team Pfieffer can look forward to a change of weather and pace with a few key prospects hitting the business end of their training.

After the long procession of winter tracks and abandoned meetings took a toll on programming, Pfieffer will be keen to tackle a dry track at Kembla this weekend with two lightly raced charges with "plenty of upside".

The 5yo mare Immortal Miss, a bold chestnut like her famous sire Sebring, will start in race 1 over 1300m with Mitchell Bell on board. With just four opponents, Bell will be looking to provide the stable with their first winner of the 2016/17 season from barrier 2.

"Her first-up run was a pass but I'm expecting good improvement back on top of the ground and now with that run under her belt" commented the trainer.

Bookending the meeting is the handsome bay Pelethronius, who is set for race 8 over 1400m with Winona Costin taking the ride from the outside barrier.

A winner at his first start at this track and distance in January, Pelethronius was in the same race as his barnmate Immortal Miss last start and showed enough in the straight to indicate he was on track to keep improving with racing this preparation.

"He hit the line well at Goulburn, and (jockey) Reith was pleased with the way he picked up over the final furlong or so. He is a horse with good improvement yet to come and natural ability" said Pfieffer.

Pfieffer's stable will soon hold no vacancies as the 35 boxes all hold an array of horseflesh, from seasoned campaigners to the newest recruits fresh from the breakers.

Among those gearing up for their first starts are the two powerful 3YO colts Nevada Mo and I Thought So.

A formidable pair who have developed into imposing athletes, Nevada Mo and I Thought So have impressed their trainer since their arrival and have "just done everything right" over the past few weeks of training.

Nevada Mo is a rich bay son of boom US sire Uncle Mo from the Danehill mare Pearl Ardane, a winner in town over 1580m and a perfect matron so far with three foals to race all proving to be winners.

I Thought So is unsurprisingly by the dual hemisphere champion in So You Think and a "carbon copy" in looks of his famous sire. A rich chocolate brown with a white star on his forehead, I Thought So is from the stakes-placed Fusaichi Pegasus mare in Cat's Pyjamas, who won five races in Melbourne over 1100m-1200m.

Both colts were purchased by Pfieffer as yearlings from the Inglis Classic and Magic Millions sales rings, just like the latest crop of young horses about to hit their straps as 2YOs.

Joining the long list of Pfieffer's exciting new prospects are the imposing Pierro filly from O'Perfect One, the Choisir filly from the well-related Jewel Vault and the Faster Pussycat filly by More Than Ready, a half-sister to Pfieffer's champion fillies Atmospherical and Gai's Choice.
