Gai's Choice does it at Randwick

Almost 12 months ago Warwick Farm trainer David Pfieffer experienced his biggest thrill when Graceful Anna won the MM 3YO Trophy and he is on the way back with Gai’s Choice following her win at Randwick on New Year’s Day.

Gai’s Choice will head to the Gold Coast for the $1 million three-year-old feature that has been renamed the Guineas over 1400m on January 15 and attempt to emulate her star stablemate’s deeds a year ago.

“The race has fallen away a bit so it would be silly not to go there and give her a go,” Pfieffer said.

“While there at this age, you have to run for that sort of money.

“$600,000 [first prizemoney], there are Group One races that aren’t worth that much.”

Sydney’s leading jockey Corey Brown was back from holidays and aboard Gai’s Choice and they settled in the back half of the field behind a strong tempo set up by The Last General.

In the straight, The Last General kicked strongly and the well backed American Crew set out after the leader, with Gai’s Choice tacking onto the back of American Crew.

American Crew took the lead inside the final 100 metres but as quickly as he found the front he was under siege and Gai’s Choice edged clear over the final few strides.

“She wandered about a bit at the top of the straight but that’s probably a bit of immaturity,” Pfieffer said.

“She lengthened out nice when she had the task in front of her and found the line good.”

Struggling for his breath after the race, Corey Brown said Gai’s Choice will improve further from the run.

“She’s still not there as a racehorse yet,” Brown said. “She’s still learning, she doesn’t know how to get down and get dirty, but she’s going the right way.”

Gai’s Choice defeated the Chris Waller-trained American Crew with The Last General from the Clarry Conners stable hanging on gamely in the straight to finish third.
